Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi

Mountain Gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei)

The Mountain gorillas are a subspecies of gorillas that inhabit parts of the mountainous regions in central Africa. They are one of the two subspecies of eastern gorillas, the other being the eastern lowland gorillas. Mountain gorillas primarily live in the dense forests and volcanic mountains of three countries: Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These areas are part of the Virunga Mountains and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Mountain gorillas were once critically endangered, but thanks to conservation efforts, their population has increased with over 1,000 individuals living in the tropical rainforests in East Africa. However, they are still listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Mountain gorillas live in stable, cohesive groups, known as families, consisting of several females, their offspring, and one dominant silverback male. The silverback leads and protects the group, making important decisions such as finding food and defending against threats.
